What is
arthroscopic surgery of the shoulder?
Dr. Dauphiné may choose to repair damage in
your shoulder, such as a torn rotator cuff,
using arthroscopic surgery. Using small
incisions, Dr. Dauphiné will insert a tiny
telescope into your shoulder. This camera is
connected to a video monitor in the
operating room, allowing Dr. Dauphiné to see
inside your shoulder. Other specialized
instruments are inserted through the small
incisions and are used to repair your
shoulder without having to use a large
incision. Sometimes it’s best to operate
through a larger incision. Dr. Dauphiné will
decide which procedure is best for your
individual problem. The operation may be
recorded on a DVD or CD and photographs are
often taken of the procedure.
Will I have to stay in the hospital after
my surgery?
Most arthroscopic surgery is performed
out-patient. That means you will go home on
the same day as the procedure after a short
recovery period. Sometimes it is best to
stay overnight in the hospital after major
surgery. If you must stay overnight, Dr.
Dauphiné and his staff will arrange this for
you.
Will I be able to drive and take care of
myself after arthroscopic surgery?
You will not be able to drive on the same
day of your surgery. It’s very important to
have someone who can drive and look after
you for the first day or so following
surgery. Dr. Dauphine can help you determine
when it’s safe for you to drive. Never drive
while using narcotic pain medicines.
When will I be able to return to work?
When you return to your normal work depends
on what kind of work you do. If your job
isn’t physically strenuous, you may return
to work when it is comfortable for you to do
so; perhaps you may return to work within
one or two weeks. If your job is physically
taxing, you may require several months of
rehabilitation before you are able to return
to your normal work. In either case, it is
very important for you to follow Dr.
Dauphiné’s instructions. In some cases, Dr.
Dauphiné may release you for modified work,
with some restrictions until you are
completely healed and strong.
When will I be able to shower after
surgery?
You may shower immediately after surgery as
long as you can keep your incision dry. Dr.
Dauphiné will let you know when it is
alright to get your incision area wet.
